The hairpins refer to women. The twelve beautiful women in Jinling are the main characters in Hong Lou Meng (A Dream of Red Mansions). They are all very smart and beautiful, but have different backgrounds and different personalities. However in a very sexist society being no exception, all of them suffered the same tragic fate. From left to right are: Miao Yu, Xiang Yun, Qiao Jie, Qin Keqing, Xue Baochai, Lin Daiyu, Wang Xifeng, Yuan Chun, Ying Chun, Tan Chun, Xi Chun, Li Wan.
